Dog Training and Adventure Camp

About Meghan Burke

I have been passionate about working with animals since I was a child. As a kid, I was in 4H and rode horses, pet sat and walked dogs for neighbors, and volunteered with a wildlife rescue in high school. Right after high school I began working in dog kennels, as well as interning and then volunteering as a dog walker at the Humane Society.. Around the time I began working with dogs professionally, I attended the University of Vermont from 2011-2015 where I focused on dog training and animal behavior courses. There I graduated from the Honors college with a degree in Animal Science and a minor in psychology.

After a decade’s worth of experience working with animals professionally, I was encouraged by friends to take the My Dog Camp course instructed by certified trainer and dog behavior expert, Rhonda Bilodeau. Through what I learned in the course I was able to open my own dog adventure camp where my mission is to improve quality of life for dogs and the families they live with by helping meet their needs for enrichment, socialization, and exercise.

I am most inspired by my dogs, Delilah and Mia. Mia was the dog I grew up with who initially got me interested in dog training. She was the sweetest dog who was up for any adventure and she learned so many tricks! After I graduated college I adopted my terrier Delilah. Living with Delilah has been a very different experience from living with Mia. As a terrier, she has a higher prey drive, different enrichment needs, and a more obsessive and feisty nature. As a rescue dog, she suffered from trauma and lack of socialization early in life that impacted her ability to cope with stressors in the environment and truly feel safe and relaxed. I’ve worked with so many trainers and have learned SO much about dog behavior in order to help her thrive! Now I want to help other dogs like her and their families strengthen their relationships, learn how to communicate with each other, and learn how to manage and modify their behavior in a fun and positive way!

Both of these dogs have taught me so much, not only about dog training, but also about compassion, empathy, patience, curiosity, and partnership. Mia in particular was always right by my side whenever we went hiking, and inspired the name of my business!
